Zach Doran, a beloved student-athlete and MMA competitor from Mustang, Oklahoma, tragically passed away in 2024 following a sudden cardiac arrest. In the wake of this tragedy, the Doran family spearheaded "The Doran Act" in Oklahoma, mandating AEDs in athletic facilities statewide.
Accepting the award on Zach’s behalf was his father, Jason Doran, a dedicated advocate and client of Elite Athlete Marketing (EAM). Through his partnership with EAM, Jason has worked to elevate the national conversation surrounding heart safety for young athletes.
“Zach’s life was defined by his heart for others, and this award is a testament to the lives he continues to touch,” said Jason Doran. “We are grateful to the American Heart Association and the Bear Bryant committee for providing this platform to honor Zach’s memory and emphasize the critical need for AED accessibility.”
The gala also celebrated several prominent figures in college football:
Curt Cignetti (Indiana University): 2025 Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year.
Phillip Fulmer: 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
The late Mike Leach: Posthumously honored with the 2026 Heart of a Champion Award.
Jerry Mack (Kennesaw State): Newcomer Coach of the Year.
Bob Chesney (James Madison): Winner of the Fan Vote Favorite Award for the second consecutive year.
The Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards continue to support the American Heart Association’s mission to fund life-saving research and public education. For more information, visit bryantawards.org.
