Oklahoma's Fourth-Ranked Midfielder Eyes OU, South Florida Following Father's Footsteps

MUSTANG, Okla. -- January 3, 2026 -- Avery Edgerton knows exactly where she wants to go. The University of Oklahoma tops her list of dream schools, followed by the University of South Florida, Arkansas, Oral Roberts and Missouri. The path makes perfect sense when you know her father played professionally after starring at South Florida and grew up in Oklahoma.
"I want to be remembered for being great like my dad and the most important thing to me is making him proud of me," Edgerton said.
Lee Edgerton was an All-State soccer player at Del City High School, played two years at Oklahoma Christian before transferring to South Florida, where he started and led the Bulls to their first national tournament appearance in 14 years. He graduated with a criminology degree, got drafted by MAISL in 1997, and played nine years of professional indoor soccer. He also suited up for the US Futsal National Team and scored twice against Honduras in the 2004 World Championship qualifier.
Now he's a Major in Arson Investigation with the Oklahoma City Fire Department. And every day he trains his daughter -- who's already ranked fourth in the state of Oklahoma as an eighth-grader.
Avery plays midfield and defender for Mustang United 2010 Girls and Mustang South Middle School. She posted 10 goals and more than 15 assists this fall season while helping her team finish first in Oklahoma Premier League play with 38 goals scored and zero goals allowed across seven games. Her career totals exceed 100 goals with countless assists.
The recruiting services already know her name. She's registered with SportsRecruits, AthleteOne and NCSA. College coaches will eventually come calling -- though she's still in eighth grade and focused on adding more hardware.
Mustang United won the 2025 Oklahoma President's Cup State Championship and reached the semifinals at President's Cup Regionals in Texas. Tournament titles stacked up throughout the year: Wichita Open 2010 Champions, SouthLakes Cosmos Cup 2011 Champions, Bob Moore Cadillac Labor Day Cup 2010 Champions, Sporting Arkansas Fall Invitational 2011 Champions.
"I want to follow in my dad's footsteps and play professional soccer and then become a Firefighter," Edgerton said.
She's got the bloodline. She's putting in the work. And she already knows which schools she wants wearing down a path to Mustang, Oklahoma.
