HMRC has been checking R&D tax relief claims more closely, and plenty of UK businesses only discover gaps in their paperwork once a letter arrives. iTax Advisors helps companies deal with R&D enquiries, and review their claims before an enquiry ever starts.
What an R&D enquiry looks like
HMRC usually opens an enquiry because something in the claim needs explaining. It might question whether a project really counts as R&D, how the costs were worked out, what the technical uncertainty was, or whether the evidence supports what was claimed. You’ll probably need to describe the research in plain terms, show what was scientifically or technologically new, and provide the financial and technical records behind it.
It’s easy to get wrong if you don’t know the rules well. A reply that contradicts the original claim, or buries the answer in a pile of documents, tends to lead to more questions rather than fewer.
Why bring in an adviser
A good adviser helps you work out what HMRC is really asking, tracks down the documents that answer it, and drafts a clear response. An independent look at the original claim also helps. If there are weak points or inconsistencies, it’s far better to find them yourself first.
What we do
iTax Advisors only works on UK R&D tax. We review claims, check the technical documentation, test the qualifying costs, and explain what an enquiry will require from you.
Keep your records as you go
The rules and HMRC’s expectations keep shifting. Writing things down while the project is happening is much easier than rebuilding the story two years later. If you’ve had an enquiry letter, or you’d just like a second opinion on a claim you’ve already made, the sooner you ask, the more options you usually have.
