New Analysis Warns of Persistent DeFi Rug Pull Schemes Targeting U.S. Crypto Investors

Posted December 23, 2025 by Jacob_Ketzlah

DataForensics has released a new blockchain forensic analysis warning that DeFi rug pull schemes continue to pose a significant risk to U.S. cryptocurrency investors, based on fraud investigations conducted throughout 2024 and 2025.

The analysis documents how fraudulent token creators leverage misleading marketing, manipulated liquidity structures, and smart-contract controls to extract investor funds before abruptly abandoning projects—often within weeks of launch.
According to the findings, these schemes represent one of the most damaging forms of crypto investment fraud currently affecting retail participants in the U.S. market, with limited options for asset seizure once funds have moved on-chain without law-enforcement involvement.

DeFi Growth Continues to Attract Fraud Actors

Decentralized Finance has expanded rapidly over the past several years, offering open access to trading, lending, and yield mechanisms without traditional intermediaries. However, the same characteristics that enable innovation—permissionless deployment and pseudonymous participation—also make DeFi environments attractive to fraud actors.

Recent blockchain forensic reviews show that rug pull activity continues to account for a significant portion of crypto-related losses, with schemes frequently involving:
- Newly deployed tokens paired with established assets such as ETH or stablecoins
- Aggressive social-media promotion promising rapid price appreciation
- Hidden smart-contract logic allowing developers unilateral control

Understanding DeFi Rug Pull Schemes

A DeFi rug pull typically occurs when token creators intentionally design a project to appear legitimate while retaining the ability to extract liquidity or restrict trading.
Based on recent case analysis, rug pulls commonly fall into three categories:

Common Rug Pull Variants Identified

- Liquidity Removal
Developers withdraw liquidity from trading pools, causing token prices to collapse instantly.
- Sell Restrictions Embedded in Code
Smart contracts are designed to prevent holders from selling, while allowing developer wallets to exit freely.
- Token Supply Dumping
Creators rapidly sell large pre-allocated token holdings, overwhelming market demand and leaving investors with illiquid assets.

Indicators Observed in 2024–2025 Investigations

Blockchain transaction tracing conducted during recent investigations identified recurring warning signals prior to rug pull events, including:
- Developer wallets retaining disproportionate token control
- Liquidity pools that were not locked or time-restricted
- Sudden volume spikes without organic user adoption
- Smart contracts lacking independent third-party audits

“Blockchain transparency allows these patterns to be documented clearly after the fact,” Jacob added. “However, tracing is primarily an evidentiary process and seizing stolen funds requires police action and legal authority.”

The Role of Blockchain Forensic Analysis

Blockchain forensic analysis and cryptocurrency transaction tracing help establish how funds moved, which wallets were involved, and where assets were consolidated after a fraud event. These findings support:
- Law-enforcement investigations
- Regulatory reporting
- Legal proceedings involving asset seizure requests

Importantly, it is not possible to recover stolen cryptocurrency without police involvement, and no investigative process can guarantee asset restitution once funds have been transferred.
