Newport Beach resident and travel baseball coach on planning ahead, keeping kids safe and slowing down on the water

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Nov. 3, 2026 — Jeremy Foti, a Newport Beach resident who loves boating to Catalina Island with his family, is sharing a few simple habits that help a day on the water go smoothly. For Foti, the trip across the channel is less about the destination and more about the time it gives families together.

"The best boat days are the ones where nobody's in a hurry," said Jeremy Foti. "You plan ahead so that once you're out there, all you have to do is enjoy it."

Foti's tips for families planning their own Catalina trip:

Check the marine forecast, not just the weather. Conditions on the open water can differ from what it looks like at the dock, and wind often picks up later in the day. Foti recommends leaving early and planning the return with conditions in mind.

Make life jackets non-negotiable for kids. Every child should have a properly fitted life jacket, and everyone on board should know where the safety gear is before leaving the harbor.

Call ahead about moorings. Avalon and Two Harbors both have harbor offices that manage moorings, and availability changes with the season and the day. A quick call before leaving saves guesswork on arrival.

Pack more water and snacks than you think you need. Sun and salt air wear people out fast, especially younger kids. Shade, sunscreen and plenty of water keep everyone comfortable.

Give everyone a job. Foti, who has spent years coaching youth baseball in Newport Beach, says kids enjoy the day more when they're part of it, whether that's helping with lines, spotting the island or keeping an eye out for dolphins.

"It's a lot like coaching," Foti said. "When kids have a role, they stay engaged and they're proud of what they did. On a boat, that turns into memories they talk about for years."

Foti also encourages first-timers to take a boating safety course and to start with shorter trips close to home before making the crossing.

"Catalina is right there, and it's one of the best things about living here," Foti said. "Do it safely, take your time, and bring the people you care about."
