Kaushalya Hospital Treats Hip Fractures in Older Patients With Partial Hip Replacement as Part of Its Arthroplasty Service

Hemiarthroplasty sits alongside total knee and total hip replacement at the Thane trust hospital, aimed at getting elderly patients walking within days of a fall.

Kaushalya Medical Foundation Trust Hospital performs hemiarthroplasty, a partial hip replacement used for fractures of the neck of the femur, as part of its arthroplasty surgery service, giving older patients in Thane who fracture a hip after a fall a route back to walking that does not depend on the broken bone healing.
In hemiarthroplasty, the fractured ball of the hip joint is removed and replaced with an implant while the patient's own socket is kept. The approach is commonly used for displaced fractures in older people with weak, osteoporotic bone, where fixing the bone with screws carries a higher risk of failure. Because the new ball takes weight immediately, patients are usually helped to stand and walk early, which lowers the risk of chest infection, clots and bed sores that follow long periods lying down.
"For an eighty year old, a hip fracture is often not the injury that does the damage. It is the six weeks in bed after it," said Dr Sameep Sohoni, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Kaushalya Medical Foundation Trust Hospital. "If the bone is not going to hold a screw, we replace the ball and get them up. The family's job then is to keep them walking, and keep the house safe so it does not happen on the other side."
The hospital's arthroplasty work covers total knee replacement, total hip replacement and hemiarthroplasty, with robotic assistance available for knee and hip replacement. Its orthopaedic team, Dr M V Sohoni, Dr Kiran Kumar Bhavnani, Dr Sandeep S Kelshikar and Dr Sameep Sohoni, also handles fracture fixation of the shoulder, elbow, forearm and wrist, arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction. Dr Sameep Sohoni's areas of expertise include joint replacement, fracture surgery and osteoporosis.
The hospital accepts cashless treatment through public sector and private insurers and several corporate empanelments. Families can find details of arthroplasty surgery and the orthopaedic OPD timings on the hospital website.
