## Developing a Sustainable Package for Real Food Applications

Maibao’s packaging engineers, material specialists, and design team worked together to develop a customized solution based on the brand’s product requirements.

Instead of using a simple paper replacement, the team designed a multi-layer packaging structure that balanced environmental considerations with food protection needs.

The outer layer used FSC-certified kraft paper, providing a natural appearance while supporting responsible forestry practices. To improve barrier performance, a water-based barrier coating was introduced as an alternative to traditional aluminum-plastic structures.

The inner sealing layer incorporated a bio-based compostable sealing film designed for suitable industrial composting conditions. This structure allowed the package to maintain necessary sealing performance while reducing reliance on conventional plastic materials.

Beyond material selection, the packaging structure was also redesigned. Engineers optimized the standing pouch format by adjusting the bottom fold structure, improving shelf presentation and increasing compression resistance by approximately 30%.

The addition of a food-grade reclosable zipper helped consumers maintain freshness after opening, which was especially important for products consumed over multiple occasions.

## Testing Before Large-Scale Production

For the project team, packaging development did not end with design approval. Before mass production, Maibao conducted multiple rounds of testing to confirm that the new structure could perform under realistic conditions.

Samples were placed in a controlled environment at 40°C with 90% relative humidity for accelerated aging testing. After 30 days, the packaged products maintained stable moisture levels, and the roasted nuts preserved their expected texture.

The team also performed transportation simulation tests, including multi-angle drop tests from a height of 1.5 meters. The package damage rate was reduced from approximately 1.2% with the previous packaging to below 0.1% after optimization.

To ensure smooth production, Maibao’s technical team worked with the customer’s manufacturing facility to adjust the temperature and pressure settings of existing VFFS packaging equipment. After adjustments, the sealing qualification rate reached 99.5% during high-speed production.

These steps reflected a simple principle: sustainable packaging must work not only on a design board but also on a production line and throughout the supply chain.

## Measurable Improvements After Packaging Upgrade

Following the launch of the new packaging, the health food brand achieved several improvements across environmental performance, logistics, and consumer response.

The project results included:

* 45% reduction in plastic usage compared with the previous packaging structure;
* 38% reduction in calculated carbon footprint;
* 40% improvement in storage space utilization through optimized packaging dimensions;
* Increase in stacking capacity from five layers to seven layers;
* Packaging satisfaction rate reaching 98.5% on major e-commerce platforms.

The new packaging also received positive consumer feedback. Posts mentioning the product packaging increased on social media platforms, with consumers frequently highlighting the natural appearance and environmentally responsible design.

The improved packaging performance also supported the brand’s expansion into several premium organic supermarkets and zero-waste concept stores.
