BIXBY, OK — Local dentists at One Eleven Dental are encouraging area residents to pay closer attention to early warning signs that are often dismissed as minor but can signal more significant oral health concerns if left unaddressed.

According to Dr. Tej Lad, many patients delay seeking care because early symptoms — such as occasional gum bleeding, mild sensitivity, or slight tooth discomfort — can seem too minor to warrant a dental visit. However, these changes can sometimes be the first indication of developing issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, or a cracked tooth.

Among the signs Dr. Lad recommends patients not ignore are gums that bleed regularly during brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, gum swelling or tenderness, teeth that feel loose or have shifted, and new or worsening sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods. Visible changes such as gum recession, where gum tissue appears to pull away from the tooth, were also cited as a symptom that deserves prompt evaluation.

"It's common for patients to wait until something is painful before scheduling an appointment," said Dr. Lad. "But many of the more serious dental issues we see started out as small, easy-to-miss changes. Catching them early usually means simpler, more comfortable treatment."

Dr. Cameron Craig, also of One Eleven Dental, pointed to physical damage as an area patients frequently underestimate. A chipped or cracked tooth that isn't causing pain, for example, can still worsen over time under normal chewing pressure. Similarly, a filling or crown that has become worn may not be obvious to the patient but can be identified during a routine exam.

"We generally recommend evaluation for any symptom that persists for more than a few days, rather than waiting to see if it resolves on its own," Dr. Craig noted. Regular dental checkups also play a role in catching changes patients may not notice themselves, since some early-stage issues, including gum disease, can progress without significant discomfort.
