ATHENS, GREECE — The PaliVerse Project, an initiative of the Center for the Study and Practice of Theravada Buddhism, today announced the launch of PaliVerse.org, a free digital platform offering the first complete, unified English translation of the entire Pāli Canon (Tipiṭaka) and its commentaries, alongside an interactive AI-based study tool.

For more than 150 years, scholars have worked to translate the roughly ten million words that make up the Pāli Canon. The result has been a patchwork of partial translations, produced across different eras by different translators, using inconsistent terminology and interpretations — leaving no single place where a student or practitioner could study the complete teachings in a coherent, consistent form. PaliVerse was built to close that gap.

The platform brings together all three Piṭakas — the Sutta-piṭaka (Discourses), Vinaya-piṭaka (Monastic Discipline), and Abhidhamma-piṭaka (Higher Teaching) — along with their commentaries (Aṭṭhakathā), in a single freely accessible translation using consistent terminology throughout. Translation of the sub-commentaries (Ṭīkā) is already underway.

A hybrid approach combining professional translation infrastructure with advanced AI

Unlike other efforts to apply artificial intelligence to Pāli translation, which typically rely on general-purpose, low-cost AI tools and often produce inconsistent or fabricated content, PaliVerse combined professional translation infrastructure — including Trados Studio for terminology management and translation memory — with Anthropic's Claude AI, alongside customized terminology management, word-level lemmatisation, and extensive prompt design and quality control. Pāli text was translated directly into English rather than through an intermediate language, preserving nuances that are frequently lost in pivot-language translations. The result is a level of term-by-term consistency across the entire corpus that the organization says has not previously been achieved by either traditional scholarship or general AI translation tools.

The translations have drawn attention from established Pāli scholars. Professor Rupert Gethin, President of the Pāli Text Society, has said that PaliVerse is capable of producing essentially correct translations of commentarial Pāli. Dr. Alex Wynne noted that the platform's rendering of the commentary on the Brahmajāla Sutta effectively captures the notoriously complex syntax of commentarial prose. Bhikkhu Bodhi has likewise remarked on how quickly a pilot translation project was completed relative to the years such work traditionally requires.

Beyond translation: an AI system grounded in the Canon itself

PaliVerse also offers an AI-based explanation system designed to help students and practitioners understand the Canon's teachings. Rather than answering questions from general knowledge, the system retrieves the relevant passages of the Tipiṭaka before generating a response, and every answer includes direct references and links back to the source text — allowing readers to verify explanations against the Canon rather than relying on unreferenced or potentially fabricated AI output, a limitation the organization says is common among general-purpose AI systems when queried about Buddhist teachings.

Rooted in six years of monastic teaching

The project traces its origins to 2018, when Michael Xynos founded the Center for the Study and Practice of Theravada Buddhism in Greece with the explicit goal of translating the Pāli Canon into English, Greek, and other languages — a goal that, at the time, exceeded what was practically achievable given the scale of the Canon and the scarcity of qualified translators. In 2019, Most Venerable Ñāṇadassana Mahāthera, a Greek forest monk with nearly five decades of study of the Tipiṭaka and its commentaries, began teaching the Center's lay community directly from the Canon, while the community itself learned to support a fully maintained monastic discipline in an urban setting. When large language models emerged in 2022, the technology needed to realize the original translation goal finally existed. PaliVerse is the result of bringing that teaching, methodology, and technology together.

Free access, non-profit mission

PaliVerse operates as a non-profit platform under the principle of Dhamma Dāna — the gift of the teachings. The complete Tipiṭaka translation is available to all users at no charge, and will remain so as commentaries and sub-commentaries are added. Optional memberships, which include access to the AI explanation system and personal study tools, help fund the platform's ongoing operation, translation into additional languages, and support for the monastic communities that preserve the tradition.

What's next

The organization says it is continuing to translate the sub-commentaries and other essential texts of the Canon, and is developing translations into Greek and modern Sinhala, an adaptive personalized learning system, a mobile app for daily guidance from the Canon, and an international advisory committee of scholars to provide ongoing quality control.

PaliVerse invites Pāli scholars to contribute feedback through the platform's built-in review tools, and welcomes practitioners, institutions, and organizations interested in supporting or partnering with the project.
