Toradex introduces the Aquila iQ8 System on Module, powered by Qualcomm Dragonwing, delivering high-performance edge AI, advanced connectivity, and efficient computing for next-generation industrial and embedded applications.

27 August 2026, Horw, Switzerland: Toradex, a leader in embedded computing solutions, today introduced Aquila IQ8 - its first System on Module built on Qualcomm Dragonwing industrial-grade processors.

Powered by the Qualcomm Dragonwing™ IQ-8275 processor from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., the Aquila IQ8 brings high-end, power-efficient compute to the Aquila family, giving OEMs building robotics, computer vision and industrial edge systems a module that runs demanding edge AI workloads directly on the device.

The Dragonwing IQ-8275 combines an eight-core Qualcomm® Kryo™ Gen 6 CPU, a Qualcomm® Adreno™ 623 GPU and a dedicated Qualcomm® Hexagon™ NPU supporting up to 40 dense TOPS of AI processing performance. Its integrated architecture brings the ISP, CPU, GPU and NPU onto a single platform, helping simplify system design, reduce hardware and software complexity. Paired with up to 12 cameras over 3x 4-lane CSI support, it is designed to give Aquila IQ8 the headroom for advanced computer vision, generative AI, local Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models and responsive inference – running at the edge, not in the cloud.

“As AI accelerates from the lab to real-world industrial systems and beyond, performance alone isn't enough. Success depends on turning advanced technology into scalable products that can be deployed, maintained and continuously improved. The Aquila combines the Qualcomm Dragonwing IQ-8275 with the high-quality engineering, software platform and long-term lifecycle support that Toradex is known for." says Samuel Imgrueth, CEO of Toradex. "The result is a production-ready foundation that helps OEMs bring intelligent products to market faster and support them throughout their lifecycle."

High-performance AI for the physical world

The Aquila IQ8 targets industrial AI that goes beyond reading sensor data: systems that perceive their environment, reason through multiple steps, and act on what they find - in real time, without a round trip to the cloud. The same compute foundation covers workloads OEMs are shipping today: sensor fusion, visual inspection, anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, navigation and human-machine interaction.

Running (such) AI applications directly on the (Industrial IoT) device improves responsiveness, keeps sensitive operational data under the device manufacturer's control, and cuts the dependence on constant connectivity. Target applications span autonomous mobile robots and drones, multi-camera computer vision and industrial automation, medical and agricultural equipment, AI-enabled edge appliances, energy infrastructure, and compact industrial computing systems, among others.

Ideal for demanding industrial products

Aquila is the Toradex System on Module family designed for computationally intensive AI, computer vision, robotics and industrial PC workloads. It pairs a rugged 400-pin board-to-board connector with modern high-speed interfaces, efficient 1.8V I/O, the Direct Breakout carrier-board approach and modular thermal options - engineering that lets device manufacturers put advanced silicon into a compact, maintainable product instead of a development board, while cutting carrier-board complexity and design risk.

Aquila IQ8 is backed by Toradex's proven product-ownership model, combining rigorous hardware validation, in-house BSP development and dedicated engineering support throughout the product lifecycle. Torizon, the embedded Linux platform that simplifies the development, deployment, and maintenance of secure embedded devices, adds secure updates, device management, fleet maintenance and a software foundation designed to simplify compliance with requirements such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). Together, they provide OEMs with a platform built for long-term deployment - not a module that requires software re-engineering every few years.

Start earlier with the Arduino®️ VENTUNO™ Q board

Development doesn't have to wait for Aquila IQ8 product samples. Through the ‘Works with Arduino’ program, VENTUNO Q gives developers an accessible platform for prototyping advanced AI and robotics on the Qualcomm Dragonwing IQ-8275 today. They can start on VENTUNO Q, kickstarting their journey on Arduino®️ App Lab or developing with Linux tools of their choice, and carry that work forward to Toradex Aquila IQ8 for production.

Each partner plays a distinct role in that path: Arduino makes advanced edge AI and robotics approachable for a broad developer community, Dragonwing brings the high-performance, power-efficient compute foundation, combined with AI and multimedia SDKs to help developers streamline application migration and accelerate development, and Toradex carries the work into a long-lived industrial product - with Aquila IQ8, Torizon, engineering support and lifecycle management built in.

"The gap between a working prototype and a production-ready machine is where many industrial AI projects stall. With VENTUNO Q, we’ve made high-end edge AI accessible to developers for rapid experimentation. " said Marcello Majonchi, Senior Director, Product Management, Arduino, "Now, through our Works with Arduino program, those same developers have a clear path to take their innovations from the lab to the factory floor. The Toradex Aquila IQ8 powered by Dragonwing IQ-8275 extends the performance of Qualcomm Dragonwing technology into a rugged, industrial-grade SoM, helping ensure that prototyping can be validated and ready for commercial scale."

"We are pleased to work with Toradex on the Aquila IQ8 System on Module, powered by the Dragonwing IQ-8275 processor, which is designed to bring high-performance computing and AI to demanding industrial and robotics systems," said Eric Mazzoleni, VP, Industrial IoT and Robotics Europe, Qualcomm Germany GmbH. "This collaboration helps enable developers to build upon their development work with the Arduino VENTUNO Q and scale to industrial-grade Toradex products with reduced complexity and accelerated time-to-market."

Availability

Further Aquila IQ8 product details, including module configurations and exposed interfaces, will be announced over the coming months.

Toradex plans to make Aquila IQ8 samples available in the first half of 2027, with long-term availability planned through at least 2038.
