Hyderabad, India: Reefer Express, a cold chain logistics provider serving India's pharmaceutical and healthcare sector, has expanded its cold chain packaging and route validation process to address a persistent gap in India's pharma supply chain: packaging tested in controlled lab environments but never validated against the country's actual climate and transit conditions.
The move responds to a widening concern among pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors shipping temperature-sensitive products across India, where ambient conditions can range from single-digit winter temperatures in the north to over 45 degrees Celsius during summer months in central and western regions. Generic cold chain packaging, validated under standard laboratory conditions, frequently fails to hold its rated temperature range once it enters this kind of variability, putting vaccines, biologics, diagnostics, and clinical trial materials at risk during transit.
Reefer Express now qualifies its packaging formats, including EPS foam, vacuum insulated panels, and phase change material systems, against route-specific ambient data rather than a single generic benchmark. Each shipment is matched to a packaging configuration sized for its product's temperature range and its actual transit duration, with real-time temperature and location monitoring built into the shipment rather than offered as a separate add-on.
“Most cold chain packaging failures in India do not happen because the material was wrong. They happen because the validation behind it was never tested against the conditions the shipment actually faces,” said a Reefer Express operations lead. “A route from Chennai to Hyderabad in May and a route from Delhi to Mumbai in January are not the same test case, and treating them as one is where pharma companies get exposed.”
The expanded process also includes a documented temperature excursion protocol for every shipment, specifying notification steps, quarantine decisions, and investigation records in the event a product moves outside its approved range in transit. Reefer Express has paired this with continued focus on last-mile handling, an area the company identifies as one of the most common points of cold chain failure in India, where products often lose temperature control after leaving the reefer vehicle and before reaching the final recipient.
Reefer Express operates across India's pharmaceutical hubs, offering temperature-controlled transportation, storage, and distribution services for the pharma and life sciences industry, with packaging and monitoring capabilities designed specifically for the country's climate zones and regulatory requirements.
