Honda City Outperforms Costlier Cars in ADAS Emergency Braking Test

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are becoming common across car segments, and autoX tested their effectiveness on four popular models.

• The Honda City and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 delivered consistent results in the AEB test.
• The AEB test on the Mahindra XUV700 suggests that it is the least predictable car.
• The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 braked in the shortest distance.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) represent one of the biggest advancements in modern automotive technology. Therefore, many manufacturers are now equipping their cars with it across different segments. To determine which brand offers the most effective system, autoX conducted a test involving the Honda City, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Mahindra XUV700, and Mercedes-AMG EQS 53. Surprisingly, it was the Honda City—the most affordable of the lot—that outperformed the rest in the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) test.

Among the features of ADAS, Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) is the most critical system, as it activates the brakes automatically when a potential collision is detected. In our test, all cars successfully stopped on their own, but the Honda City achieved the earliest stop, halting at the farthest distance from the obstacle.
Interestingly, while Mahindra’s system is relatively older and less advanced than the others, the real surprise was the Honda City outperforming not just the Hyundai Ioniq 5 but also the high-end Mercedes-AMG EQS 53.
The Honda City not only stopped the farthest from the human obstacle but also displayed the most composed performance in the test. It detected the obstacle early and applied the brakes in a smooth, progressive manner, unlike the others. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 ranked second, while both the XUV700 and the EQS 53 braked only at the last moment. That said, the XUV700’s results were inconsistent, whereas the EQS 53, despite braking later, was consistent in hitting the same marker each time—thanks to its massive braking setup.

To put things into perspective, autoX’s Road Test Editor, Shivank Bhatt, summed it up in his verdict: ‘It’s important to remember that ADAS systems aren’t developed to add to the cost of the vehicle. Take the Honda City and its Honda Sensing technology as an example. Despite being the most affordable ADAS-equipped car in the country, its assistance features are not just for show—they genuinely work, and they work effectively. So, the next time someone dismisses ADAS as a gimmick, don’t believe it.’
