Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands — As Port Blair enters its peak tourist season, Andaman Discover is drawing attention to one attraction that continues to sell out night after night: the Sound and Light Show at Cellular Jail. With an additional evening slot now running daily and a projection mapping upgrade that has transformed the jail's facade into a full scale visual canvas, the 45-minute show has become one of the most requested additions to Port Blair sightseeing bookings this year.
The show takes place on the grounds of the historic Cellular Jail, the colonial-era prison built by the British between 1896 and 1906 to hold Indian political prisoners far from the mainland. After sunset, the jail's puce-coloured wings and central watchtower are lit through a multi-layered projection system, paired with a narrated score that recreates the experiences of freedom fighters such as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Batukeshwar Dutt, who were held there during British rule.
The Andaman and Nicobar Administration's Directorate of Information, Publicity and Tourism recently expanded the schedule to four Hindi shows a day during peak season, running at approximately 5:50 PM, 6:50 PM, 7:50 PM and 8:50 PM, alongside a dedicated English show on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The added slot was introduced specifically to reduce overcrowding at the venue, a response to visitor numbers that have climbed steadily each tourist season.
"We're seeing more travellers plan their entire first evening in Port Blair around this show rather than treating it as a quick add-on," said a spokesperson for Andaman Discover. "The upgrade to the lighting and sound system a couple of years ago changed the experience considerably. It's no longer just a narration with some lights in the background. It's a full projection across the jail's actual walls, and it hits differently once you've walked through the museum earlier in the day."
Tickets for the show are priced modestly, generally between ₹50 and ₹150 for adults depending on the time slot, with discounted rates for children, reflecting the site's status as a national memorial rather than a commercial attraction. Advance booking is available through the Andaman and Nicobar Administration's official e-tourist portal up to 90 days ahead of a visit, though walk-in tickets remain available at the venue subject to availability. Andaman Discover reports that online slots for the English-language show, which runs on only three days each week, have been the first to fill during the current season.
Andaman Discover has responded to the rising demand by building the Cellular Jail museum visit and evening show into its standard Port Blair sightseeing itineraries, pairing the experience with transport, timed entry planning and same-day stops at Corbyn's Cove Beach and Marina Park. The company says this sequencing helps first-time visitors avoid the common mistake of splitting the jail visit and the evening show across separate days, which often means returning to Port Blair later in a trip that was meant to focus on the outer islands.
"The show works best as the closing chapter of a full day at Cellular Jail, not a standalone outing squeezed in after dinner," the spokesperson added. "Travellers who plan it into their first or last day in Port Blair tend to walk away calling it the most memorable evening of the whole trip."
Travellers planning an Andaman trip this season are advised to confirm current show timings and prices ahead of their visit, since schedules are revised periodically by the tourism administration to reflect seasonal sunset times and visitor volume.
