From Neural Circuits to Social Impact: Translating Science into Systems.

Receiving the Troland Research Award reflects efforts to translate neuroscience discoveries into scalable educational systems with real-world impact.

 
Scientific discovery, in isolation, does not change the world. Its value lies in translation—the process of converting knowledge into systems, tools, and practices that can be applied at scale.

My research has sought to move beyond understanding the brain toward designing solutions that reflect that understanding. This involves collaboration across disciplines, including education, psychology, and technology.

One area of focus has been the development of early screening tools informed by neural data. These tools aim to identify children at risk for reading difficulties before those difficulties become entrenched. By intervening early, we can reduce long-term educational disparities.

However, scaling such innovations requires more than scientific validation. It requires integration into existing systems, alignment with policy frameworks, and accessibility for diverse populations.

This is where the challenge—and the opportunity—lies. Neuroscience provides the insights, but it is through collaboration that these insights become impactful.

The Troland Research Award recognizes not only the discovery of new knowledge, but the effort to ensure that this knowledge reaches those who can benefit from it most.
