The Predictive Brain: Redefining Early Intervention Through Neuroscience.

Receiving the Troland Research Award highlights research uncovering early neural signals that can predict learning outcomes and transform intervention strategies worldwide.

In education, intervention has traditionally been reactive. A child struggles, the system responds. Yet neuroscience suggests a different possibility—one in which the brain itself provides early signals of future learning trajectories long before challenges become visible in the classroom.

My research has focused on identifying these signals, particularly those associated with reading development. By examining patterns of brain connectivity in early childhood, we have been able to detect markers that correlate with later literacy outcomes. These findings suggest that the foundations of reading are laid much earlier than previously assumed.

The implications of this work are significant. If we can reliably identify children at risk for learning challenges such as dyslexia before they begin formal education, we can fundamentally change the nature of intervention. Instead of addressing difficulties after they arise, we can anticipate them and provide support proactively.

This shift has both scientific and ethical dimensions. Scientifically, it represents a move toward predictive models of brain development. Ethically, it raises important questions about how such information should be used—how to ensure that early identification leads to empowerment rather than labeling.

At its core, this work challenges the timing of education itself. It suggests that learning systems must be designed not only around what children know, but around how their brains are developing.

The Troland Research Award recognizes the potential of this approach. It is a step toward a future in which education is informed by early, precise, and actionable insights into the developing brain.
