The Architecture of Learning: A Scientific Perspective on Human Potential.

Honored to receive the Troland Research Award for advancing understanding of the brain’s learning architecture and its role in shaping human potential.

At its most fundamental level, learning is an expression of the brain’s architecture. It reflects the organization of neural systems, the strength of their connections, and their capacity to adapt over time.

My research has focused on understanding this architecture in the context of reading—a domain that offers a unique window into how complex cognitive skills are constructed. By studying how the brain integrates visual, auditory, and linguistic information, we gain insights into the broader principles of learning.

These principles challenge traditional notions of intelligence. Rather than viewing ability as a fixed trait, neuroscience reveals it to be a dynamic process, shaped by both structure and experience.

This perspective has important implications for education. It suggests that the goal should not be to measure intelligence, but to cultivate it—to create environments that support the development of neural systems in diverse and flexible ways.

For individuals with dyslexia and other learning differences, this approach offers a more inclusive framework. It recognizes that variation is inherent to the system and that effective support requires understanding, not standardization.

Receiving this recognition from the National Academy of Sciences is a significant milestone, but it is also a reminder of the work that remains. The architecture of learning is complex, and our understanding of it is still evolving.

The challenge ahead is to continue exploring this complexity while ensuring that the knowledge we gain is used to expand opportunity and improve lives.
