Lassy LL Chiwayo has had a hand in several elements of South African public life. He has been involved in the liberation struggle, democratic leadership, provincial government, a legislative administrator, municipal leader, diplomat and author. Chiwayo's leadership journey began pre-1994, when he was arrested for his role in the liberation movement and incarcerated on Robben Island (1987-1990).
After our democratic elections, he was elected as a Mpumalanga Senator (1994-96) then as the Mpumalanga MEC (Sports, Culture and Recreation), followed by the position as the MEC for Finance (1997-99).
Subsequently, Chiwayo worked in the legislature as Chief Whip (1999-2001). This was a legislative leadership/coordination role within the provincial political framework. Years on, the leadership journey continued as the Executive Mayor of Mbombela Local Municipality (2008-2011). His term coincided with local municipality participation in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, an internationally prominent development occasion.
Following in the career footsteps from his leadership journey, Chiwayo entered the diplomatic arena.
He served between 2011 and 2012 in areas that ranged from Central East Asia through regional organization work, to being an academic in international relations. Publishing enables an extension of this experience. Speaking from a career they have 'lived', professionals and public figures can publish their ideas, journeys and insights, for the benefit of those they know – and for those they still have to meet.
Many technical experts choose to document all the great experiences they have accumulated into a useful publishing record, so that other people can benefit from their wealth of wisdom. Others – like many of us – pick up from our life and work experiences, and use publishing as a platform to educate, entertain and empower other readers.
