Lassy LL Chiwayo has built a career in areas of political leadership, public administration, municipal governance, diplomacy and publishing. His working life links different epochs of South African history while illustrating the diverse duties of public leadership. Chiwayo's work as an active participant in the liberation struggle began during the apartheid era.

He was detained during 1985 and held in prisons on Robben Island from 1987-1990.

Following the country's transition into democracy, he moved into the domain of formal political institutions and public administration. Served as a South African senator representing Mpumalanga from 1994-1996. Served as the MEC for Sports, Culture and Recreation from 1996-1997. Served in the domain of provincial financial administration as MEC for Finance in Mpumalanga from 1997-1999.

Served as Chief Whip of the Mpumalanga Legislature from 1999-2001.
