South African politician and author Lassy LL Chiwayo links together many aspects of South African public life. From the beginning, political activism in apartheid South Africa through democratic government, in municipal leadership, as a diplomat, and now as an author.

Lassy LL Chiwayo's early political activism immersed him in the liberation struggle against apartheid. He was arrested in 1985 and detained on Robben Island until 1990. The historian Longmore also records Chiwayo's association with other political prisoners detained by the apartheid government.

His career in the post-apartheid democratic era was centered around work for South African public institutions. In Mpumalanga he served as a member of the legislative and executive for the period, during which he was a Senator, and in the western province as a member of the provincial executive responsible at different times for Sports, Culture and Recreation, and in the Mpumalanga Legislature as Chief Whip.

Chiwayo's career hit a municipal level when he became Executive Mayor of Mbombela. He served from 2008 to 2011 in the run-up to hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup, when the city and the stadium became a focal point for South Africa's international sporting attention. The contemporary press accounts identify Chiwayo as the mayor in office while the stadium was built and the town prepared to host the international event.

The professional game led him to international representation, first at an institutional level as a diplomat serving as South Africa's consul-general in Shanghai. His published oeuvre shows how professional experience takes on a deeper dimension through writing and publishing.
