Baar (August 26, 2026) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 114.26, examining Denmark’s consultation on a revised European Commission proposal concerning styrene in plastic food contact materials (FCMs) and articles.

The Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries launched the consultation in July 2026 on a revised European Commission (EC) draft regulation proposing a specific migration limit (SML) for styrene.

The draft regulation (version 2) contains provisions that would:

• Establish a specific SML for styrene (FCM substance no. 193) in Annex I of Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 on food contact plastics
• Introduce transitional measures for compliant food contact plastics prior to the date of entry into force of the amendment

The consultation closed on August 7, 2026, and an updated proposal is expected to be voted on by the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (PAFF Committee) on September 25, 2026. If adopted, the amendment could affect stakeholders throughout the EU food contact plastics supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, retailers and other economic operators.
