It works by timing hang time, then computing a height from that air time along with body weight and ground forces. Two limits matter. Only a standing sergeant jump registers, so running max vertical testing falls outside its range. And the timing method invites gaming: an athlete who tucks the legs and delays foot contact on landing extends air time and inflates the number without jumping any higher.

The Budget Conversation Nobody Enjoys

Cost separates these categories more sharply than any spec sheet. Plate systems carry a serious hardware price, and the software and data subscription renews every year on top of it. Since the platforms sit raised off the floor, most facilities also buy a surrounding mat so athletes don't roll an ankle on landing, which pushes the invoice higher again. A jump mat costs a fraction of that, so the entry price looks friendly right up until the cheat problem surfaces during a real testing session. Why Combines Standardized on Mechanical Measurement

Professional combines sit on decades of historical results, so any equipment change needs justification. Three criteria drove the decision: accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility. A mechanical tester also gives athletes a physical target overhead, and studies referenced across the industry show that athletes jump higher when something sits there to hit. Force plates and mats leave the athlete swinging at empty air, which quietly costs height on every rep.
