Newark, New Jersey resident Everett T. Ruth’s stage play, “Divorce Towne”, is now available for licensing, courtesy of noted theatrical publisher Next Stage Press. The comedy - yes, comedy - takes a look at the what, why and who when couple Nick and Tracey Townes bid adieu to their years-long marriage. The synopsis:
Stages of a Breakup: CONFLICT-DENIAL-RESOLUTION-ACCEPTANCE
NICK and TRACEY TOWNES are about to sign their divorce papers after twenty-four years of being together. They are in the now empty living room, save for a lone sofa. The papers are on the coffee table for them to sign. Before they permanently dissolve their union, the two “let it all hang out” about what went wrong with their marriage. Aided by copious amounts of vodka, Nick, Tracey - and Vicky - reminiscence about their issues, both before and during their ill-fated union.
“Divorce Towne” is a humor-infused airing out of unresolved feelings and issues. It’s about could’ve, should’ve and would’ve mixed with equal parts of remember when. It’s about reasons why and reasons why not as the final dissolution of a marriage takes place in living color/real time.
First Play
Everett’s first attempt at writing a play occurred at age eighteen. “It consisted of a thirty-page comedy that featured an Elvis impersonator. It was my initial foray into long-form scriptwriting.” It would be years later when Everett’s first fully-length play, “A Case of Love” was written. In between, he honed his skills writing spec scripts of variousTV shows and a number of original teleplays and screenplays. “I love dialogue and writing for different characters. I can take the words spinning around in my head and apply them to various scenarios and personalities.”
What’s Next
Everett is currently shopping his original screenplays, teleplays and a book of poetry titled, “Saints and Sinners (A-Z)”. He’s also looking “at any and all professional writing opportunities.” Meanwhile, the playwright hopes to see “Divorce Towne” performed in various theaters around the world. “Love and loss is a universal happening - it bonds us all. It’s a human experience and the human experience transcends all shapes and sizes, creeds and colors.”
