Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation (NMR) is helping athletes and active adults in Somerset reduce their risk of injury through sports injury prevention care built around a functional movement assessment.
The assessment looks at how a person controls basic movements and identifies physical imbalances within the primary movement patterns common to all sports. NMR then designs a corrective exercise program around the results to improve performance and lower injury risk.
"We look for the weak link in how a person moves before it turns into an injury. Catching it early helps our patients stay in the game," said Dr. Vince Sferra, DC, at NMR.
NMR recommends that a conditioning program built for a specific sport begin months before the season starts. Training should build strength and endurance gradually, with rest days between sessions so the body can recover. Rushed reconditioning that places repetitive stress on muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and bones can leave athletes more prone to sprains, pulled muscles, fractures, and shin splints.
The approach is not limited to athletes. People with chronic back pain, neck and shoulder stiffness, hip or knee problems, or long-standing injuries that never fully healed may move in guarded ways that put them at greater risk. Age-related changes in flexibility and endurance can have the same effect. An individualized program helps build strength, endurance, and flexibility based on each person's specific needs. For patients who are already injured, NMR's rehabilitation program supports a return to activity.
