Dental insurance is often misunderstood, and the confusion tends to peak at year-end. Scottsdale Dental Arts and founder Dr. Jason McCargar, DMD, are clearing up five common misconceptions so patients can plan ahead before their plan year closes.
Myth 1: Unused benefits roll over to next year.
Fact: Many dental plans run on a calendar year, and unused benefits typically expire on December 31. “Plans differ, so patients should confirm their own terms with their insurer,” Dr. McCargar said.
Myth 2: December is a fine time to book.
Fact: Appointment availability can become limited as the year closes, according to the practice. Scheduling earlier gives patients more choice of dates and time to complete treatment that may take more than one visit.
Myth 3: You have to wait for the bill to learn your costs.
Fact: Before a visit, the Scottsdale Dental Arts team verifies benefits and provides an estimate of expected out-of-pocket costs. “People make better decisions when they know the numbers first,” Dr. McCargar said. The practice is in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Delta Dental, DenteMax, Guardian, MetLife and Physicians Mutual PPO plans.
Myth 4: No insurance means no care.
Fact: Patients without coverage can use third-party financing through CareCredit and Cherry to spread payments over time. Terms depend on the plan selected. Financing may be used for restorative care as well as elective services such as Invisalign and cosmetic dentistry.
Myth 5: Insurance covers cosmetic dentistry.
Fact: Most plans do not cover elective cosmetic procedures, though some treatment may be partially covered when it also addresses function or oral health. “It’s worth asking before assuming,” Dr. McCargar added.
