Bureau of Indian Standards Issues Notification Introducing New and Revised Indian Standards Effective June 2026

New Delhi, India – June 27, 2026

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued a notification introducing a series of newly established and revised Indian Standards covering electrical appliances, road and tunnel lighting, submersible motor winding wires, electrical installations, internships, and electrical machinery. The notification has been published under Rule 15 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Rules, 2018 and forms part of the Government of India's continuing efforts to align national standards with evolving industry and international requirements.

According to the notification, the newly established standards became effective on 09 June 2026, while several previous editions will continue to remain in force until 09 December 2026, providing manufacturers, testing laboratories, certification bodies, and industry stakeholders sufficient time to transition to the revised standards.

Among the key updates are the introduction of IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 99):2026 for commercial electric hoods, IS 1944:2026 for road and tunnel lighting, revised specifications for submersible motor winding wires under the IS 8783 series, IS 19465:2026 covering Time-Delay Switches (TDS) for household electrical installations, IS 29997:2026 on internship quality guidelines, and IS/IEC 60136:2024 relating to carbon brushes and brush holders for electrical machinery.

The notification also specifies that older versions of standards including IS 1944:1970, IS 8783:1995 (selected parts) and IS 14376:1996 will be withdrawn on 09 December 2026, allowing industries to prepare for compliance with the latest technical specifications.

Supporting Information

Indian Standards play a significant role in ensuring product quality, safety, testing consistency, and regulatory compliance across multiple industries. Regular revisions help incorporate technological advancements, harmonize Indian standards with international benchmarks, and improve manufacturing practices.

Manufacturers, importers, testing laboratories, product designers, infrastructure developers, and certification professionals should review the updated standards to understand their applicability and prepare for implementation before the withdrawal of the previous versions. Businesses involved in BIS Certification or product testing may also need to assess whether their existing products, documentation, or testing reports require updates in accordance with the revised standards.
