From The Airwaves To The Community: Sugar Kayne Radio Founder Gives Back To Jewish Care

Matthew Kayne, founder of Sugar Kayne Radio and known on air as DJ Sugar Kayne, is continuing his long-standing volunteering with Jewish Care. Last October, the Jewish Chronicle named him its “Mensch of the Month”.

Matthew volunteers with Jewish Care two afternoons a week, doing administrative work for the charity’s Volunteering Department. He also supports events, fundraising and community projects.
His volunteering began before the COVID pandemic, when he helped with bingo sessions at a Jewish Care day centre. Since then, his role has grown, and he now combines his volunteering with his love of music by DJing at Jewish Care events, where residents and visitors join in, sing along and dance.
For Matthew, volunteering is closely connected to the reasons he started Sugar Kayne Radio: giving people a place to be heard and helping communities come together.
Speaking about his volunteering, Matthew said: “Volunteering with Jewish Care has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it gives me a real sense of purpose. Whether I’m helping to match a volunteer with someone who needs a friendly face or putting on music at one of our events, I always leave knowing I’ve made a difference to someone’s day.
“Some of my favourite moments are when I’m DJing for the residents. Seeing people smile, sing along and get up to dance reminds me exactly why music matters so much to me. It’s the same feeling I want listeners to have when they tune in to Sugar Kayne Radio.
“I’d encourage anyone who has a few hours to spare to think about volunteering. You don’t need to be a certain type of person to help, and you get back so much more than you give.”
Matthew’s commitment to his community also runs through his music. He has released three singles, “Free Like A Bird”, “Look At Me Now” and, most recently, “It’s a Wonderful World (Remix)”. Each one draws on his own experiences and shares a message of hope and positivity.
Listeners can hear DJ Sugar Kayne on Sugar Kayne Radio every Friday and Sunday from 9pm to 11pm and on Saturdays from 9pm to midnight.
