SGS focuses on Thailand’s proposed revisions to requirements for plastic food contact materials and articles.

Baar (October 20, 2026) – SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 132.26, reporting on Thailand's proposed revisions to food contact plastic packaging requirements.

A consultation opened on September 16, 2026, by the country's Food and Drug Administration (TFDA). The proposed amendments to the Notification of the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH No. 435) B.E. 2565 (2022) would revise requirements for permitted plastics, recycled materials and certain substances used in food contact plastic containers.

The revisions include the following key changes:
• Introduction of seven new types of plastic and requirements for their use in food contact containers, including stricter migration limits for certain materials
• Removal of certain plastics used for the manufacture of containers
• New section covering plastic containers made from recycled high-density polyethylene (rHDPE), including detailed requirements
• Enhanced quality requirements for certain types of plastic, including provisions relating to epoxy derivatives, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and specific migration limits for selected substances

Manufacturers, importers, retailers and other intermediaries operating in the food contact plastic materials and articles supply chain in Thailand could be affected if the amendments are approved. The proposals are open to comment until December 31, 2026.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 132.26 includes a list of applicable phthalates and their abbreviations.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 132.26 for more details.
